For Quoakle, navigation is a high priority - helping our users go from page to page quickly and easily, so they and you can find what you're looking for.

At the bottom of each page, you will have noticed links to other topics in that county, and also users have been able to travel from e.g. our 'Pets' page in one county over to another 'Pets' page in a different county using the simple dropdown menus.

Well - now there are buttons to make it even clearer to new users that Quoakle works in this way!

Try it out now! Go to Quoakle the UK Web Directory and choose your topic. I fancy going out to a restaurant, so I'd choose Gloucestershire, then Restaurants to look for local Restaurants. What a great selection! However, I'm also willing to travel a bit, and live close to Herefordshire, so now I can click on the Other Counties button at the top of the page, and instantly look at the Restaurants available in Herefordshire. Simplicity itself!

We're excited that more people using Quoakle are going to see much more easily how to move around the website. We hope you will do too!

No. 1 on Google for Cheltenham and Gloucester Restaurants!

For several months Quoakle has been No. 1 on Google for the Keyword Phrase: Cheltenham Restaurants. This has been bringing thousands of visitors to Quoakle's easy-to-use Restaurant Directory.

Now the restaurant directory is starting to receive visitors who have typed in the Keyword Phrase: Gloucester Restaurants.

Steve Jobs, Apple and Quoakle

Steve Jobs has stepped down as CEO of Apple, handing the reigns over to Tim Cook, Apple's COO.

While Steve Jobs will remain involved in Apple as chairman of the company, he will no longer run Apple on a day-to-day basis.

To celebrate the end of his career as CEO of Apple, we thought it would be good to publish a quote from Steve Jobs that really must apply to Quoakle!

Steve Jobs on designing products:

“Look at the design of a lot of consumer products — they’re really complicated surfaces. We tried to make something much more holistic and simple. When you first start off trying to solve a problem, the first solutions you come up with are very complex, and most people stop there. It would be great to know what Steve Jobs thinks of Quoakle, but I don't expect we will ever find out. However, the Quoakle team will certainly be continuing to strive to maintain and develop "an elegant and simple solution" for Internet users looking for local businesses.

Half a million click-throughs and counting!

More good news from the Quoakle office! Over the past five years, Quoakle's graphical directory has made searching for local businesses quicker and easier for thousands of users.

Since August 2009, Quoakle's innovative page layout and simple presentation of information has enabled users to connect with local websites literally hundreds of thousands of times. The most recent statistics from Quoakle's CMS reveal the passing of the landmark half a million click-throughs to local websites.

With the current dramatic expansion of the Days Out and Leisure Directory, the Quoakle team is aiming to reach one million click-throughs within the next twelve months.

Quoakle launches 14 new counties!

A year ago, on the 'Introducing Quoakle Video', director Nigel Steele said "Our aim is to spread right across every county in the United Kingdom".

Last week the team made major steps in that direction with the launch of 14 new counties, from Cornwall in the south-west to Cheshire in the north-west. The first topic within these counties is Days Out and Leisure. Having observed Quoakle's rise to number one on Google for the search term "days out in Gloucestershire", Nigel took the decision to push ahead with this major expansion of Quoakle's Days Out and Leisure Directory. Soon users will be able to flick from county to county looking for great places to visit and family activities and finding hundreds of websites with just one click.

Nigel is pictured above next to the newly launched Days Out in Cheshire page. The expansion into Cheshire was something which gave him particular pleasure, having been born in the Cheshire market town of Nantwich.

Excellent 6 month Google Page Rank results for Quoakle

Quoakle's innovative graphical directory reports great improvement in Google Page rank during the last 6 months. The page rank rose at least one unit on 37 "logo pages" and the highest ranked page is now Days Out and Leisure in Gloucestershire at Google rank 4.

The chart below shows a comparison between Google rank for Quoakle pages as on December 23rd 2010 and then as on 23rd June 2011.

Forest of Dean Bluebells launch Quoakle Web Media's Glorious Gloucestershire Film series

Today Quoakle launched the first video in its Glorious Gloucestershire series! The subject matter chosen centred around the beautiful bluebells in the Forest of Dean and was filmed a few weeks ago.
The Glorious Gloucestershire series is Quoakle's first venture into the "world of moving pictures" and aims to promote the county of Gloucestershire, steeped in history and full of natural beauty, with its many fabulous tourist attractions. Popular with visitors from the length and breadth of Britain, as well as visitors from abroad, Gloucestershire has so much for the locals to visit too. Quoakle aims to make some the great attractions across the county more well known.

Good News Centre - Newent - the latest Gloucestershire website created by the Quoakle team

The Quoakle team continues to offer a growing range of services to businesses across the Gloucestershire region - supporting local companies in the design, development and promotion of their own website.

Having recently completed a website for the well-established garden services company, Greenfields (which is proving to be very successful), the next exciting project was the re-designing of its website for the popular Coffee House and Christian Bookshop at Newent, the Good News Centre.

The project started with one of those "divine appointments" when Quoakle's head of Client development, Sean Cresswell, having just returned from a mission trip to India, got chatting to Centre manager Donna Clark. He happened to mention he worked for a Christian company that created websites and a very positive business relationship was begun.

Nigel Steele, the project co-ordinator for Quoakle, couldn't wait to produce something really special for the Good News Centre having enjoyed many visits to the bookshop and coffee shop over the last twenty years.

After initial research into the websites of other Christian bookshops and Coffee Shops across the UK, Nigel talked with Donna and agreed the style and feel that she wanted the site to have - a vibrant, welcoming and contemporary look. Graphic Designer, Sam Gretton, was asked to produce a design for the new website and came up with three different versions. The one which was chosen was something very close to what is now live on the web.

Some creative adjustments were made to the design, having shown the drafts to one of the trustees and then the work was handed over to Web Developer, Dave Southey, to create the templates and do all the complicated work with coding! The reliable content management software - Joomla was used to power the website.

One of the final stages was the taking of hundreds of photographs to to enable us to present various aspects of the Centre and its work most attractively.

The new Good News Centre website aims to show what a great place it is to visit, for coffee and tea, for meals, for Christian books, gifts, Christian Music - DVDs, CDs, Fair trade items and lots more! Thanks to the great photography of Stroud-based Tom Barnfield, the website really is able to present the Centre as the attractive setting it is for local people as well as visitors.

You may even spot Quoakle's Administrator, Naomi Clayfield, who we took along for the photo shoot with some other friends of the Centre.

Quoakle's new website design services

During the last year the Quoakle team have broadened the range of services offered to businesses across the Gloucestershire region and now offer support to local companies in the design, development and promotion of their own website.

One of the first projects was with the well-established garden services company, Greenfields. When Churcham-based Greenfields Garden Services needed a new website for their expanding business, they looked no further than the other side of the A40 to Quoakle's team of website specialists.

Greenfields Garden Services was started in 1988 by Chris Snell, comprising of one push along

mower, a few hand tools and a small van and now employs over 40 people with a large client base across the South West, Midlands and Wales.

Greenfields original connection with Quoakle was when they became the very first business to advertise on the innovative online business directory in September 2006. Greenfields helped with the official launch of Quoakle helping to plant hundreds of daffodils along the A40 in Churcham . During the last year, Quoakle's website promotion specialist, Nigel Steele, has been providing advice and help at Greenfields' Kitesnest Lane base for a range of internet marketing activities.

Greenfields managing director, Chris Snell, said "The internet is the way all business is going now so the work Nigel and his Quoakle team have been doing for us has been invaluable."

The new Greenfields website reflects the way the company has grown over the last few years. It's now involved in eight major areas of work: landscaping, grounds maintenance, tree surgery, fencing, the design and installation of children's play areas, a wide range of services for schools, safety surfacing and adult fitness equipment.

During the summer holidays, the number of people visiting Quoakle has gone up by an excellent 30%!! We're really excited about this, and just wanted to say a big 'Thank You' and 'Keep going'!

We are regularly receiving over 200 visits a day. As you can see from the image, the ongoing trend is definitely rising, which is extremely encouraging. Although Quoakle is seeing over 200 visits a day, this has actually amounted to over 21 000 visits to business websites this month; almost 1000 per day!

We're really happy that Quoakle is continuing to promote local business quickly, easily and frequently!

Days Out and Restaurant pages in Gloucestershire are the top two page listings, however there are a growing number of visitors across all the counties!

Throughout the four years that Quoakle has been growing, we've made navigation a high priority - helping our users go from page to page quickly and easily, so they and you can find what you're looking for.

Mark and Jeremy have worked really hard to create a drop down box, that will develop over the next few weeks, allowing all our visitors to travel from county to county and stay with a particular topic.

This week, a small number of the Quoakle team ventured out into local business districts in Gloucester, to spread some good news about Quoakle - the quick link to local websites. Above is a picture of them about to go into Gloucester Quays.

Nigel, Sean, Maria and John took to the streets visiting shops and businesses, engaging with the public and with shop workers. They handed out our most recent leaflet 'Great things to do for the summer holidays', encouraging friends and families to check out the Days Out pages of Quoakle to see what they can do during the summer break.

The Quoakle "Wedge" puts in appearance at the first Gloucestershire Motor Show

The Quoakle "Wedge" co-made by Roger Hewlett and becoming a familiar sight around the roads of Gloucester was seen at its first Motor Show on Saturday, 12th June, Gloucestershire Motor Show.

The Gloucestershire Motor Show was opened by Gloucester rugby star, Phil Vickery, who swapped rugby boots for driving gloves to open the Highnam-based, car show last weekend. More than 100 classic cars took centre stage.

The Motor Show was organised in aid of two charities, the Pied Piper Appeal and Cruise Bereavement Care.

Congratulations to Samuel Taylor from Gloucester on winning the very first Quoakle Quiz! The quiz was featured in the centre pages of the bi-monthly magazine, Keep it Gloucestershire. Samuel is pictured with friend, Sean Cresswell, enjoying a delicious lunch at the popular waterside restaurant, The Wharf House last Thursday, 10th June. Waitress, Anna, looks on as Samuel and Sean enjoy some mouth watering dishes...a sirloin of Herefordshire beef with creamy green peppercorn sauce and Cotswold pork filled with apple and fig, served with a creamy sweet potato mash!

Spanish Volunteers help Quoakle team!

The Quoakle team grew yesterday, with some great help provided by enthusiastic volunteers. Young people from Gloucestershire and their friends from Mallorca worked with the Quoakle team to visit nearby village Highnam delivering leaflets.

We continue to work hard to grow awareness of Quoakle across the counties, and delivering these leaflets to locals is just a small part of that. However, we had great fun yesterday and we're really grateful for all the help given on such a beautiful sunny day!

In October, Quoakle Director, Nigel Steele, and Quoakle Office Manager, Naomi Clayfield, visited Red Box Studio in Birmingham to film the first Quoakle "Gogglebox" video. The video is an introduction to Quoakle and can be seen on all the Quoakle logo pages. The video is around 30 seconds long and explains how Quoakle works with images and logos instead of text. We hope this exciting development will increase interest in the site as well as help new users understand what to do when they arrive on Quoakle - the graphical directory.

Quoakle's 3rd Birthday Celebrations!

At the beginning of October, Quoakle celebrated its third birthday.

Quoakle staff wanted to do something a bit different from the usual sort of birthday celebration and hatched a plan to help a third world charity.

Keeping it in the family, Quoakle's Head of Web Development, Mark Finney, teamed up with dad, Steve, who works for the Christian charity, Interserve. One of Interserve's projects is helping villages in North India get clean drinking water by digging new wells.

On Saturday 24th October, Steve drove Interserve's promotional rickshaw into the centres of Cheltenham and Gloucester.

The weather in Cheltenham was wet and windy so not very good for busking. However, the determined Quoakle musicians still played quite a few jazz and other easy-listening songs.

The authentic, Indian rickshaw created plenty of interest on the journeys from Churcham to Cheltenham and from Cheltenham to Gloucester, driving at the front of a convoy of Quoakle vehicles.

On arriving in Gloucester's Eastgate Street, the rickshaw was parked in the covered walkway outside BHS, where shoppers were also able to enjoy some quality busking from Quoakle staff cum musicians. On the guitar was Ben Steele, keyboard Mike Gladwell and Saxophone Tim Steele. The weather in Gloucester was fine and so hundreds of people were able to enjoy the music, as well as the children passing by receiving the colourful Quoakle balloons.
The Churcham-based company, responsible for the development of Quoakle, is hoping its third birthday celebrations will raise a few hundred pounds towards Interserve's clean water project.

Two Cheltenham Restaurants Top 600 hits

Two Restaurants from Cheltenham have now topped the 600 mark. Users of the Quoakle Restaurant directory have now made over 628 visits to the website of Zizzi, the popular restaurant in Suffolk Square.
The website of the Speciality Restaurant in North Place, Storyteller, has received 620 visits from Quoakle users.

It's not surprising that Cheltenham Restaurants are getting a high level of internet traffic as easily the most popular keywords on our Google Adwords campaign are "Restaurants in Cheltenham". We are using literally thousands of keyword phrases in over 60 Ad groups and we are pleased to see that we are successfully directing users to useful Gloucestershire websites - quickly and easily.

Significant Development Meetings help to take Quoakle forward

During the last few weeks, a series of significant meetings have taken place focussing on different aspects of the development of Quoakle - the graphical directory.
The first meeting was held in Bristol with a Technical Consultant from the East of England. Further meetings are likely in the near future. Other meetings have been held in the Gloucester area. The first with a Business Consultant from Bristol, looking particularly at roles within the company and also looking at the financial structure. Also one of the Directors met with a Marketing and Sales Consultant from Leicestershire. A range of ideas were put forward in this meeting including some possible joint projects. It is anticipated that follow up workshops and seminars will take place early in 2008.
All in all there are some very promising developments in the pipeline!

On Monday 13th August, Quoakle team members Nigel, Tim and Ben Steele successfully climbed Scafell Pike, which at 3,210 feet is the highest mountain in England. The team are pictured sporting their Quoakle tee shirts after climbing to the summit. Marketing Director, Nigel, even managed to give away one of the Restaurant /Out and About promotional leaflets to some fellow climbers whilst at the top!

The climb up Scafell Pike, in the heart of the Lake District, was Stage One of their 4 day, Three Peaks Challenge. The Quoakle team also successfully climbed Ben Nevis (highest mountain in Scotland) on the Tuesday and Snowdon (highest mountain in Wales) on the Thursday.

Nigel, as the senior member of the party, was particularly pleased to have managed to climb all three peaks and is now working out what he wants to try next ... perhaps a run somewhere flatter!

Quoakle First Anniversary

It is just a year ago this weekend that Quoakle - the graphical directory celebrated its Official Launch.
The main event of the day was the planting of hundreds of daffodil bulbs along the verges of the A40 running through Churcham, just west of Gloucester, which provided a wonderful display of bright yellow the following spring.

Community Pixels.net (the parent company) was very pleased to receive the generous support of two established Churcham businesses for the event - Fairview Nursery and Garden Shop and Greenfields Garden Services. The Official launch of this innovative new internet directory was well covered by local media - a radio interview for Severn Sound and articles in the Citizen and Forester.

One year on and Quoakle has seen a number of major developments. Probably the most significant have been:
the launch of Restaurants in Gloucestershire in November 2006
the launch of the Out and About, Pets and Weddings directories
in the first part of 2007.

Today sees another major development... as Motoring in Gloucestershire goes live on the web. The Quoakle team is very pleased to welcome Academy Driver Training from Cheltenham as the first business on this new site.

Why Quoakle?

You are probably wondering why the name Quoakle?
In September 2006 when the first part of the directory was launched we were using the name Gardening Pixels and were going to follow up with Restaurant Pixels. On the advice of our intellectual property solicitor we started looking for a unique brand name. There were some pretty unusual ideas from Orange custard to Blue pipes to Yoakle...Stoakle...Zoakle. If you live in Gloucestershire you might spot the connection with Oakle Street, a small hamlet west of Gloucester.
It was Nigel's sister that came up with the final name we settled on ... QUOAKLE, and the rest is history!

It was a year ago this weekend that our team of young Quoaklites (friends of Quoakle) hit the Malvern Autumn Show. Travelling up from Gloucester and all wearing tee shirts sporting the brand new Quoakle logo, the group carried the official banner and received good attention from some of the thousands of visitors to the show.

Quoakle beginnings

Nigel and Mark sitting in front of the computer at Beauchamp House, Churcham, where the inspiration first came for Quoakle in mid-August 2006.
The graphical directory started with the idea that an imaged-based presentation of information- organised simply on one screen page - could be a new and exciting way of searching for information by connecting quickly and easily with a large number of websites through one click of the mouse.
The initial ideas were developed around the setting up of a gardening directory providing links to a wide range of gardening businesses in one county Gloucestershire. Very quickly it was realised that these ideas could be developed across a diverse selection of topics such as restaurants, pets, weddings etc. and also county by county. And so the graphical directory was born!
